How To Choose The Most Suitable Vitamin And Mineral Supplements For You

How To Choose The Most Suitable Vitamin And Mineral Supplements For You

by Andy G Smith

A number of years ago I believed that all food supplements were manufactured to the same standards, but I've since learned that this is not the case. From my personal research, I've found that there're many factors, which affect the quality and hence, the effectiveness of nutritional supplements. I will outline many of these now and will explain the relevance of each of the factors discussed.

The very first factor is whether a health supplement dissolves and disintegrates totally and how readily available it is for use in the body. The nutrition in the product must be in a suitable form and in proper ratios for optimum ingestion into the body's cells. This is known as the bioavailability of the product. As the bioavailability of a product is primarily determined by the ratios of elements, it is important that the manufacturer cautiously monitors and controls the necessary balance of elements during research and development.

Also, your lifestyle can play a major role in determining what amounts of vitamins and minerals you require on a day-to-day basis. As an example, if you smoke your needs are likely to be higher. In addition, are you aware that if you exercise regularly, at increased heart rates, then your body's needs are also higher? This is due to the fact that vitamins (or antioxidants) are needed to counteract the harmful by-products produced as we use oxygen. Heavy pysical activity increases oxygen consumption and hence, raises potentially toxic by-products known as free radicals.

Another valuable consideration is the manufacturing process of the supplement. As supplements only need to be manufactured to food grade standards to meet industry's legislation, it is sometimes difficult for manufacturers to control exactly what goes in to their supplements. Products might get contaminated, or may not have equivalent contents in each individual capsule and we really need consistency!

As a former health and fitness professional I have the opinion that it is more beneficial to provide our bodies with a surplus, as long as the levels that we intake are not in harmful ranges. By providing our bodies with excess, it can absorb as much as it requires and reject what is not needed. Any vitamins and minerals that are not required are excreted and so will not negatively affect our health. Some nutritional products suppliers produce products to pharmaceutical standards, so they have improved control of the makeup of each tablet. This also reduces the chances of contamination with dangerous, or illegal ingredients. With this noted, I also recommend using nutritionals that are produced to a pharmaceutical standard.

If you have weight management goals or concerns about diabetes, then low glycemic, nutritionally balanced meal replacements and healthy snacks can offer you assistance.
